Usman Tariq Calls Daryl Mitchell ‘Unsporting’ After R Ashwin’s Tactic Sparks PSL 2026 Controversy

A fresh controversy has erupted in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 after Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq reacted strongly to a tactic used by New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell — one that was earlier suggested by India’s spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin.

What Triggered The Controversy?

Usman Tariq, known for his unusual stop-and-pause side-arm bowling action, has already divided opinions in the cricketing world. During a recent PSL match between Quetta Gladiators and Rawalpindi at the National Stadium in Karachi, Mitchell was seen repeatedly pulling out of his stance while facing Tariq.

This tactic was not random. It stemmed directly from advice given by Ashwin earlier this year.

R Ashwin’s Advice That Sparked It All

Ravichandran Ashwin had openly suggested that batters should step away if Tariq pauses midway during his delivery stride.

“If the pause isn’t consistent, then the batter has every right to move away. The responsibility lies with the umpires,” Ashwin had stated on social media.

He even added that he would personally use the same tactic to put pressure on the bowler.

Usman Tariq Hits Back

Reacting to Mitchell’s actions, Tariq took to Instagram and referenced the rulebook, calling the tactic “unsporting conduct.”

He pointed out that repeatedly pulling away could be seen as an attempt to distract the bowler or waste time.

“If the batter does this continuously to deliberately distract the bowler or waste time, it can be deemed unfair play. The umpire can warn the batter, and if it continues, issue a penalty,” Tariq wrote.

He even sarcastically added: “Happy to hear 5 penalty runs, keep it up.”

What Do The Rules Say?

According to cricket laws:

  • A batter can move away if they feel the bowler has stopped in delivery stride
  • However, repeated actions to disrupt the bowler can be penalised
  • Umpires have full discretion to decide whether it’s gamesmanship or misconduct

This creates a grey area — exactly where this controversy now sits.

A Tactical Mind Game?

This incident highlights the growing tactical battles in modern T20 cricket. While bowlers innovate with unique actions, batters are equally quick to adapt within the laws.

Ashwin himself described it as a “headache for umpires” and a potential pressure tactic against the bowler.

The bigger question remains — where should the line be drawn between smart strategy and unsporting behaviour?

What Happens Next?

With Tariq’s action already under scrutiny and now this new debate gaining traction, match officials may soon be forced to step in with clearer guidelines.

As franchise cricket becomes increasingly competitive, such mind games are only expected to grow — making this one of the most talked-about rule debates of the season.
